Do You Need Moving Insurance

According to new Pew Research Center surveys, half of Americans are either moving or have known someone who is. You might not think about buying insurance if you are one of those thousands who have moved.

Many homeowners' and renters' insurance policies do not typically cover damage or loss to belongings during a move. Moving can leave your possessions vulnerable to many potential issues, so it is worth looking into moving insurance.

What is Moving Insurance?

Your possessions are at risk of being damaged or lost during the move. Moving can put your belongings at risk for theft and damage. A moving insurance policy will help you to get reimbursed for these mishaps.

There are many ways you can move. Therefore, different coverage options are available for protecting your possessions.

There are many types of moving insurance for those who hire movers

You are responsible for any items they transport if you hire movers. Federal law requires that moving companies offer at least two levels of coverage if they are moving from one state to another. You can choose which type of coverage you want to receive for any items that are damaged or lost.

Protection up to 100%. Your mover will be liable to replace any items that are damaged or lost in the shipment if you have full value coverage.

Your mover can offer cash settlements for repair costs or current value, or replace damaged or destroyed items. This coverage tends to be more extensive but is generally more costly.

Full value coverage costs can differ depending on the mover. The price of full value protection can vary depending on which deductible you choose.

Protection with value release. Although this coverage comes at no extra cost, it provides very limited protection. You can get up to 60c per pound of released value protection for your item. If your computer weighs five pounds and is worth $600, then you will only get $3 for any loss or damage (60c * 5lbs).

You can also purchase separate liability coverage. For an extra fee, some movers offer additional liability coverage via a third-party insurance company. Your mover will still be responsible for any released value coverage, but this insurance policy will pay the remainder of the loss, up to policy limits.

It is important to get written confirmation of the details and what are the exclusions if you purchase extra moving insurance from the movers.

What is not covered by moving insurance policies

Certain circumstances could limit the liability of your mover and make it more appealing to purchase moving insurance. These include:

You should not pack perishable, hazardous, or dangerous materials.

You may save some money by packing your items yourself, but it can be difficult to file a claim for damage if you do not pack them properly.

Not informing your mover by writing about items of significant value

Natural disasters like a tornado can cause damage.

It is also important to note that even if you are not moving to another state, it may be worth checking with your county or state consumer affairs agency to confirm local mover regulations. Moving companies may be subject to different liability and valuation rules in each state.

There are many types of moving insurance if you move yourself

Your homeowners or renters insurance may provide coverage if your belongings are being transported in your car, rental vehicle, or truck. If you are moving, here are some coverage options.

Trip transit or relocation insurance. A moving insurance policy is similar to a separate policy. It can help you fill the gap in your coverage when you are moving. You might have to pay for damages or losses that go beyond your insurance guidelines or policy limits if you use your car for the move. A moving insurance policy will protect your belongings. Third-party insurance policies may offer coverage for the following:

Natural disasters

Both electrical and mechanical accidents

Mildew and mold

Items of high value

Pairs or sets are at risk of being damaged

Insurers may have different policies regarding moving insurance. Relocation Insurance Group, for example, offers three levels of moving insurance: Total Loss and Named Perils. The Full Replacement Moving Insurance coverage from Lakeland Insurance is determined based upon a downloaded inventory list that you submit.

Important to know that some policies do not protect valuable items such as jewelry or collectibles while they are being moved. These cases can be addressed by purchasing storage insurance and additional coverage to protect valuable items.

Rent a truck to move. The rental company might offer coverage for your truck and passengers. These policies may include the following:

Accident damage waiver

Cargo protection

You and your passengers will be covered for medical and life emergencies in the truck cab.

Additional liability protection for injuries you are responsible

Towing equipment insurance

U-Haul, for example, offers Safemove Plus and Safemove Plus moving coverage. You get cargo protection and a damage waiver with Safemove. Also, medical and life insurance is included. You can get additional liability coverage of up to $1,000,000 and exclusion-free coverage with Safemove Plus.

There are some common exclusions to rental truck insurance:

Packaging errors can cause damage

Normal cargo shifting

Cargo theft

What is the cost of moving insurance?

Cost of moving insurance depends on the number of your belongings as well as what coverage you choose. Your moving agreement will usually include basic or free value protection if you select it. You can expect to pay approximately 1% of the estimated value of all your personal property if you choose full-value protection.

Moving insurance from third-party insurers can cost between 1% to 5% of the valuation. If we take the above estimate, it would cost between $180 to $900 to cover the coverage.

Are You a Recipient of Moving Insurance?

A moving insurance policy may be worthwhile depending on how valuable your possessions are and the distance you plan to move. If you're moving across the country, there are greater chances that the weather will damage your belongings. A moving insurance policy can give you some peace of mind. You may be less concerned if you are moving across the street.
