During the last year, the business has had more difficulties than I have come across around my 30 years experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have observed several shortages, and delivery issues caused by material allocations coming from resin vendors. This is actually the very first time I have seen all these issues at one time.
Polytetraflouroethylene (TFE) and Kynar both are on allocation.
Both of these resins are in short supply. The PTFE - Polytetrafluoroethylene product PTFE (TFE) and Kynar-PVDF manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar that is mined in Mongolia and China. The worldwide need for this mineral has risen significantly, along with the supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high heat resistance, excellent chemical resistance and incredibly low co-efficient of friction (slick) and is used within dozens of applications from non-stick fry cookware to ptfe tape for use at home. This particular mineral is actually a crucial raw material inside the production of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and several refrigerants.This increasing amount of demand bundled with shortage of raw materials is responsible for a dramatic price increase (almost double during the last year), shortages, and we expect these two factors to stay in affect in the near future.
